Commercial vans sold in Australia are assessed separately from passenger cars, under ANCAP's Commercial Van Safety Comparison.
Rather than a star rating built on crash testing, vans are graded (for example, Platinum) on the fitment and real-world performance of their collision-avoidance technology, systems designed to help a driver avoid a crash rather than protect occupants once one happens.
This page explains what the grading covers, and links through to every van we've reported on.
How is a commercial van's ANCAP grading different from a passenger car's star rating?

Passenger car ratings are built on physical crash tests assessing how well a vehicle protects adult occupants, children and vulnerable road users in a collision, alongside its safety technology.
The Commercial Van Safety Comparison tests only the second half of that picture, autonomous emergency braking, lane support, speed assistance and driver monitoring, evaluated across a range of realistic driving scenarios. It does not crash-test the van or assess occupant protection.
A van's grading tells you how well it's equipped to avoid a collision, not how it would perform in one.
What does a van's grading actually measure?
Collision-avoidance performance is assessed across several categories: autonomous emergency braking for other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, lane support systems, occupant status monitoring (including driver monitoring), and speed assistance technology.
Each category is scored individually, and combined into an overall percentage and grading tier.
Does a high grading mean a van is safe to drive in every sense?

Not on its own. A strong grading reflects genuinely useful crash-avoidance technology, and that matters for fleet safety in practice, but it's one part of a broader picture that also includes payload, load restraint, driver training and how the vehicle is actually used day to day.
Treat this grading as one input into a fleet safety decision, not the whole of it.
